What size wire to extend trolling motor? This is a common problem with electric trolling motors.

Most come to the factory with 10 wire gauges installation. These wires work well as long as they reach your battery. Unfortunately, the power cords usually connected to the motor trolling battery have to be stretched, and the uninitiated stretch the cords using the same size of 10 gauge wire.

If the factory uses 10 gauge wires, that is all required. If the wires are connected to a memory connected to the array, you are fine, as long as the wiring from the panel to the battery system is large. Minn Kota’s website provides tables for this issue. It shows that a 12-volt motor with 40 or 45-pound impedance pulling 42 amps can be obtained from a 10 AWG wire for a five-foot stroke.

But extend the stroke to 10 feet, and you can raise it to 8 AWG. If your battery is on the other end of the boat and you want to stretch the cable at 20 or 25 feet, you should climb up to 4 AWG wires load.

Wire extension refers to the distance between the battery and the factory trolling motor, not between the battery and the motor itself.

Insufficient wiring causes hot wires and sensations when the engine is running; the engine provides less excitement than the media.

In extreme cases, you may see melted cover and wires. If the cover melts and the wires touch each other, a very short circuit can start. Such costs from a direct short circuit can start to burn or injure a person very quickly. The electric motors, trim tabs, anchor-pole, and elevator anchor systems attract less fluid than most trolling motors but still require good sizing.

Determine the most current for the object, then consider the length of the wiring to determine the appropriate wire size. When connecting a remote fuse panel, you must add an amp display of any power supply and then determine the distance between the panel and the battery to determine the required wire size. If in doubt, go to the next larger size.
